If you start the waltz in the forward rotation (toe side) then find yourself stepping out in the back, this is normal when learning the waltz.
Most people have have to test their limits when it comes to leaning backward.
If this is your situation then:
1) Cary speed into the waltz. the faster and more upright you are the easier it is to transition that waltz step.
2) Begin your spin with the step back…

Use either a Roll By start or Step Back start. Once you step on delay the second foot placement. If you hole the leg away from center before putting it on the wheel greater angular momentum is created and a faster spin will ensue. This is a fun one.. Enjoy!

The Waltz is your basic skill which enables you to perpetuate spin.
The core of your body keeps the center of balance while you allow the wheel to fall and transfer momentum from one leg to the other. The Waltz will tend to produce large circle. As you improve the Waltz the circle can be made tighter.A step back start will most often start you into a waltz motion. Repeat the waltzing movement…

The step back start quickly becomes a favorite start for most.
Since the foot begins on the wheel in a raised position it allows the spinner to engage the wheel in a downward motion. This produces power but more importantly it can help initiate a waltz.

The Lunge start can be a little tricky but has an elegant and smooth look to it when executed properly. This start will teach you how to engage the upper body to begin the spin of the wheel, much like the Roll by start. Since the foot begins on the ground, it will quickly lift off the ground as you begin the spin.
